The Alpha and the Omega — Part 1

Christ has taken on many roles through time as recorded in the Bible.  This month we would like to examine some of his roles.  As stated in Revelation 1:8, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”  Here we have it from Christ’s own mouth that he was present at the beginning of time.  Since we know by faith that Christ cannot lie, this has to be true.  John also states this truth in John 1:1-3, “1.  In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  2.  The same was in the beginning with God.  3. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”

The fact is that Christ was present at creation and was an integral part in creation can be seen in other verses.  Paul points out Christ’s involvement in creation in Ephesians 3:9.  When he wrote, “And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:”  The use of the plural pronoun in Genesis also proves that Christ was present at the moment of creation.  Genesis 1:26 says, “And God said, Let us make man in our own likeness…”  The use of plural pronouns has been explained by stating that God is a great being, so he can address himself as greater than one.  After looking at the evidence of Christ’s presence at creation, we believe that this argument holds no water.  As it is written in Hebrews 1:2, “Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his son, whom he hath appointed heir to all things, by whom he also made the world,”

Christ is also the one who will deliver us from our sins and make it possible for us to have eternal life.  It is written in Matthew 1:21, “And she shall bring forth a son and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall saves his people from their sins.”  It was foretold that we would be delivered by Christ. Paul quoted this scripture in Romans 11:26, when he said, “And so all of Israel shall be saved: as it is written, THERE SHALL COME OUT OF SI’-ON THE DELIVIER, AND SHALL TURN AWAY UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB:”

Through his sacrifice, Christ will also redeem us from our sins.  Christ is likened to a lamb in many parts of the Bible, because lambs were used in the Jewish sacrifices.  John 1:29, “The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”  His sacrifice was prophesied in Isaiah.  It is written in Isaiah 52:7, “He was oppressed and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb before the slaughter, and as a sheep before the shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.”  Like a lamb Christ was sacrificed for our sin as Paul points out in Ephesians 5:2 “And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us as an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.”

We can be redeemed, because of his sacrifice.  Christ is called the redeemer in several passages of the Bible.  In Galatians Paul points out that Christ redeemed us from the law.  Galatians 3:13 says, “ Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written CURSED IS EVERYONE THAT HANGETH ON A TREE:”  In Titus 2:14 Paul says, “ Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous, of good works.”  Christ gave us the gift of redemption, so that we may serve him and have everlasting life.  The word redeemed is also used in Revelation 5:9 where it says, “And they sang a new song, saying, Thou art worth to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people and nation.” By this truth, we can see that everyone has been redeemed by Christ’s sacrifice.  Taking these passages together we see that all people who are faithful and serve God will be saved.

Because of Christ’s sacrifice, we have been redeemed.  Since we have been redeemed, Christ is our portal to our reward.  As he says in John 10:9 “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”  Paul said in Ephesians 1:7, “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.”  The Bible also tells us what we must do to be redeemed and receive his grace.  In Romans 6:3-8 it is written, “ 3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into death?  4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father even so we also should walk in newness of life.  5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death , we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6 knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.  7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.  8 Now if we be dead with Christ we believe that we shall also live with him:” In his letter to the Colossians, Paul put it this way in Colossians 2:12, “Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.”  So to be redeemed, we must be baptized and live a faithful life in service to God.  If we do this, we will be rewarded with an everlasting life in heaven.

The Jeep

I was born and raised on a farm west of Plainview, so we were a pretty good ways from the hustle and bustle of town. My father has a 1956 Willis jeep. All of my older siblings learned to drive in this jeep and I was no exception. The story takes place about the time that I was in fifth grade.

It was my birthday party and I had a bunch of boys from church over to spend the night out in the tent and do the regular tough guy things that fifth graders do. Well about two or three in the morning we get the bright idea to take the jeep out for a spin around the farm. We knew that my parents were asleep and we didn’t want to wake them up, so me and the other boys pushed the jeep far away from the house before we started it up. We got what we thought was far enough away and we started the jeep and went for a ride. What we didn’t think of was that the jeep didn’t have a muffler and sounded like a Bumblebee on steroids. The next morning we all came in for breakfast. My father let us all get set down and eating good and dropped the bomb on us “so you boys have fun last night when you took the jeep out for a spin?” You could have knocked us down with a feather. The obvious response was how did you know? We were so clever to push it away how could you have possibly known? Well what we didn’t take into consideration was that at night your father can hear better and second that fathers have superpowers to sense young boys stupidity.

I think some times we think that we are so clever with our sins that no one will know what we are up to. Eze_21:24 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because ye have made your iniquity to be remembered, in that your transgressions are discovered, so that in all your doings your sins do appear; because, I say, that ye are come to remembrance, ye shall be taken with the hand. There isn’t any place that we can go that God can’t see or hear us. We may be able to hide what we do or say in private from others, but not our God he knows the secret parts of our hearts. Brother Leland wrote a devotional titled walk the talk. We also need to walk the walk in our lives. We need to keep in our daily thoughts that God can see our every thought and action we have and live our lives accordingly. We don’t want to find ourselves surprised on the Day of Judgment by the sins we thought were hidden. 1Jn_1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

The other part to the story was that my father taught me a good lesson that morning. He taught me that I wasn’t as sneaky as I had hoped to be and he let me know that he was watching and looking out for me.  God is doing the same for us he is not looking for a reason to condemn us, but wants all to be profitable children of his.

Creation: Faith or Fiction?

We are in the middle of a war over the minds and souls of our young people.  At the forefront of the battle is a debate over the origin of life and the universe.  Can we save a generation from the lies of Satan?  Can we overcome the constant pressure from text books, Discovery Channel ™, and multitudes of college professors to teach the truth about Creation?

When discussing the origin of  life and the universe we need to understand that no matter which side of the argument you stand on, it boils down to faith.  In Hebrews 11:3 we find, “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”  Creation is constantly described to us as a “fairy tale.” To a man of secular science, faith in a Divine Creator is a laughable idea, but faith is the very thing that is needed most to believe in the Big Bang Theory.  The question is: do you have faith in a loving, caring God who designed you with a purpose?  Or do you have faith in a “pre-Big Bang singularity”, which without thought or purpose mysteriously exploded, and out of that spark of chaos we have a perfectly ordered universe? Explosions do not create, they destroy!  The evidence of creation is so clear that Paul wrote in Romans 1:20 “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:”  Can we deny the evidence all around us?  Can we ignore the Word of God as it declares our Creator?

God created the universe, earth, plants, animals, mountain and all other things for a purpose.  Isaiah 45:18 says, “For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.”  What would be the point of creating an empty earth?  He formed it to be inhabited!  Evolutionists teaches that it took billions of years to form the earth, and because of that teaching, there have been those from the religious community trying to meld creation with evolution.  This hybrid doctrine is called Theistic-evolution.  But God does not work in vain!  Why would He take billions of years to do what He could do in an instant?  Not only does this doctrine go against the nature of God but it also limits His power.  God does not need eons to create rock layers and mountains. Notice Amos 4:13 which says, “For, lo, he that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, The LORD, The God of hosts, is his name.”  As complex as it might be, God formed the mountains to be beautiful and wondrous.  If they were naturally formed through billions of years, there would be fossil records to support Evolution.  Fossil records do not show a progression of simple to complex life forms.   Evolutionists need to show that progression to prove their theory, yet the evidence does not exist!  Even plants were created for a purpose.  In Gen 2:4-5 we read, “These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created in the day that Jehovah God made the earth and the heavens. 5)  And every shrub of the field was not yet on the earth, and every plant of the field had not yet sprung up, for Jehovah God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no man to till the ground (NKJV).”  Until God had created Man, there was no reason for plants to exist.  They serve a purpose in providing nourishment to His prized creation, Man.  Man is not a descendant of an ape, but God created man in the very same image we are in today.   Jesus in Mar 10:6 says But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.”  God did not create single cell organisms that evolved into mankind. There are no fossil records to support such claims.  Gen 2:7 says, “And Jehovah God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”  We have been formed by God!

In Gen 1:1 we read, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”  Psa 33:6 tells us that “By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.”  The apostle John tells us in John 1:1-3, 14 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2)  The same was in the beginning with God. 3)  All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 14)  And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” The Hebrew writer states in Heb 1:2, “Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;” The Bible declares that the Word of God, Christ Jesus, is our Creator.  You can live a life with a purpose, knowing you are not some accidental byproduct of a cosmic blast. You were created to serve God.  In Col 1:16-17 Paul tells us, “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17)  And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.”  In Rev 4:11 we read, “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.  We were created with a purpose to serve a living God.  When we show kindness to our neighbor we are fulfilling our purpose.  When we teach someone about redemption from sin we are fulfilling our purpose.  When we stand up for our Creator in the mist of many critics we are fulfilling our purpose.

Do you find your life lacks purpose?  Could it be that you have been misplacing your faith?  Believe in God!  Read His Word!  Find your purpose!  God has called you for a purpose, will you answer the call?

There is a Battle to Fight

The very idea of War is most unpleasant to the majority of people.  Thoughts of death, torture, violation, murder, unrest, destruction, loss, fear, dread, uncertainty, and struggle are very unpleasant thoughts that are associated with War.  I venture to say as long as the Lord allows this earth to continue there will always be ongoing War.  Deep seeded hatred for a certain group of people a contributing factor in driving the development and continuation of War and this world seems to be overtaken by this kind of hatred.  Men seeking their own desires and lusts will always be opposed by other men of different self-serving motives and therefore there is and will continue to be conflict between men.  War is seemingly inevitable.  Physical War is certainly destructive and you can make your own decision about how you feel toward the idea of fighting in a physical earthly war.  But as Christians we must understand that another War is raging among all mankind.

This war has been ongoing for mankind from Adam and Eve’s confrontation with and introduction to their enemy, the serpent, in the Garden of Eden.  There are no guns, planes, tanks, grenades, missiles or physical weaponry used in this war.  This war is not fought on land, sea, the desert sands, in the mountains, or caves of this earth but it is fought on the Battleground of Man’s Heart.  This is why I chose the title Battleground.  We must all equip ourselves with the weapons and tools that the Lord has given us to use in this War so that the evil, which is in us, is overcome by the wonderful spirit that the scriptures instruct us to have.  Through this series we will identify the weapons that we can utilize, and also understand the plan that God has set forth for you and I to follow so that we can be faithful and fight the battles of sin everyday.  The Lord desires us to be successful in this effort and we certainly have the ability, through Jesus Christ, to overcome and be victorious against anything that our enemy may fight against us with.

This battle is very complex in scope and theory because of its magnitude and impact and the nature of this war.  Because every person on this earth is involved in one way or another in this Great War.   If there is a battleground, that means that a War is going on, and if a War is going on then someone is fighting, and if someone is fighting they are fighting for a purpose.  The lines have been drawn and you are occupied in this War whether you like it or not.  The key participants in this War are Satan, God, and you! Satan who is crafty and very dangerous who operates through Sin and desires nothing more than to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10) battling against God who is all powerful and desires that none perish but that all would come to repentance (II Peter 3:9) and accept his offer of eternal life through his Son Jesus Christ.  And finally, there you stand.

You must fight evil everyday, with every decision that you make, whether to obey the Lord and live a spiritual life guided by Jesus Christ and his example or to give in to the fleshly lust that we all have and struggle with.  This cannot be used as an excuse to justify sinful behavior before God therefore we always battle the inward war between our flesh and the spirit that the Lord desires for us to have.  I want all of us to continue to fight and never, never, never give up and concede defeat in this War.  I Timothy 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

The ultimate war between good and evil and you have a vested interest in the outcome of this War because the prize that is sought is your eternal destiny and soul.  Satan knows that he cannot defeat God in the big scheme of this war, for Christ was victorious over him by his resurrection but small battles for the souls of men continue to rage on.  You are one of these souls.  Your family members souls are at stake, the neighbor, the teacher, the classmate, your co-workers, the doctor, the waitress, the best friend that your are scared to lose by mentioning the Lord, every person you meet has something to lose in this war.  You cannot remain a neutral third party during this war.  So I close with asking this question:  Are you in the fight, on the frontline, on your own Battleground?

II Corinthians 10:2-5

2 But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Football!! (4th Quarter)

When comparing football to Christianity there are some certainties. There must be a good game plan, offense, defense and a bench with depth. There must also be a good coach(s). Another aspect of this correlation is the spectator.

aus-tiger

At some point in our spiritual life it might become necessary for us to be a spectator. You might be thinking, that I am out of bounds on this one, but I ask you to bear with me and keep reading…

Being a spectator is not the most advantageous place for a Christian. But for various reasons the spectator is there. Youth, age, sickness can all account for the spiritual spectator. This is not necessarily a bad thing, if the spectator is the right kind!

Who cheers on the team? Who keeps the coach honest? Who expects the players to play to their full potential? The Spectator does!

If you for some reason, or another, find yourself in the stands in this spiritual battle; don’t give up hope! Keep yelling for the team. Keep giving suggestions and exhortations! Keep up your struggle, until you can get down on the field and be a more integral part of the win! One of the best story lines ever told is that of a spectator, learning, working and striving until he/she is able to make it to the sidelines and hopefully show their worth and make a difference!

What makes a spectator so important is their desire to see a big “W!”

A true spectator is an integral part of the win. As a matter of fact, there are some college stadiums that the home fans are considered a “twelfth man.”

The bottom line is:

1Ti 4:15  Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.

Make your own dirt!

The speaker at church the other Sunday told a story that really hit home with me. The story goes that God and an evolutionist were having a conversation. God stated that he has made man from the dirt of the ground, and could do so again. A very true statement for the almighty that made the world as well as man. The evolutionist replied that with the advancements in technology today and the unlocking of the genetic code we as scientists have unraveled the mystery of how man was made and with all of this knowledge he could and would now demonstrate how he could make man from the dirt. The evolutionist then proceeded to take a large amount of dirt and start his experiment. God said wait a just one moment. The evolutionist said what is the matter? God said make you own dirt!

This was so plain to me at that time. Humans try to find all kinds of ways to explain the workings of God, or explain him away. The problem is that they can’t. When we look out our door we see the evidence of the Creator. Look to the heavens at night and see the wonder of the stars and galaxies and you see God. Look at the human body and you can see the evidence of God in the way that if functions. I spoke with a doctor one time and we had a conversation about how a child forms. He said that the brain forms first then it tells the spine to form then the organs and so on and so forth. I asked a simple question I thought and got a very honest and profound answer. I asked what tells the brain to form? His answer as a doctor was we don’t know. We know the answer is God.

Rev 1:8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

1 Cor 3:18-19-18 Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.

Roaring Lion

I Peter 5:8 (NJKV), “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”

My daughter is 9 months old, and she gets into everything.  It has been a frustrating battle because she loves getting into the things that are off limits.  She doesn’t want to dig through her basket of toys; she wants to have something on the bookshelf that I told her was a “no-no.”  Why is that?  I realized something…she is human and is susceptible to temptations just like all humans.  After this realization, I Peter 5:8 came to mind.  The devil is already after my precious baby.  Her soul is so young and innocent, and he can’t wait to turn her heart from God.  It is a terrifying thought.  As her mother, what can I do?

In Deut. 6:6-9, Moses is telling the children of Israel what to do with the commandments God had given them.  They were to put them in their heart, diligently teach them to their children, talk about them in their house and when they are away from home, talk about them before you go to sleep at night and talk about them as soon as you get up in the morning, and etc.  Basically, make those commands part of EVERYTHING you do.  Where do I start in my task of teaching my daughter?  I start by teaching by example (Matt. 5:16).  The words I say will mean nothing unless I live them out.  The next step to helping Lexi know God is to open the Bible with her (Eph. 6:4).  Prov. 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.”  It sounds easy enough, but the truth is, we as parents are responsible for what we teach our kids.  We don’t answer for their sins, but we do answer for the way we taught them to combat sin.

This admonition isn’t just for parents…think about these things next time you are with a younger sibling, a cousin, a niece or nephew, or just one of your friends’ kids.  They need you to be as good example and teach them about Jesus just as children need their parents to be good examples and teach them about Jesus.

Here is a challenge:  next time your child wants you to read them a story or tell them a story, pull out a great story from the Bible.  Next time your niece wants you to sing with her, teach her a Church song.  Start doing what Deut. 6:6-9 says, and make the word of God part of EVERYTHING you do.

Servanthood, Christian Style

“Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men.  Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.” -Mat 6:2

We live in a culture that loves to “have its cake and eat it too.”  In Christian circles it is often the same. We have the desire to serve the church, help others, and do many good works; but when we do, we often want others to know about it.  We wave the flag of boastfulness and gain the attention of others so we can feel good about ourselves, and get that coveted “pat on the back.”  In corporate America and in social settings, it is common place to be recognized for a generous donation or service to a community.  It places all the focus upon that individual and (no doubt) benefits him either in business, feeding his ego, or both.  Jesus has not  called us to be like the world.  When we do good works, we should do it, not for the limelight and attention, but secretly.  If we make boast of it, then we gain only what we ask for. There is no reward left– you received the praise of men.

Wow, that’s special, isn’t it? Why not do as Jesus taught, and receive the reward that will last forever.  In Mt. 6:4, Jesus said our Father would reward us openly for the things done quietly.

Mat 6:3-4  “But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.”

A servant of Christ will take no thought for his own ego, pride or self-serving ways.  Rather, he will, in humility, seek to please his neighbor in a way that draws absolute benefit to the recipient, and that in faith.  Then all the praise can rightfully go to God.  Who am I that I did some great thing. It is because of Christ I do what I do. The glory belongs to God!

Why Traffic Lights don’t burn out

This week one of the florescent bulbs in our kitchen burned out. Because of the design, the entire fixture quit working. Only one bulb was bad, but they all shut down because each one depended on the others to work.

A few weeks before that, a cfl burned out in a fixture in another room. This light continued to work, it just wasn’t quite as bright as it had been before. This fixture was designed to continue to provide light by connecting each bulb to the power independently. The room was a bit darker but we still managed just fine without the bulb for a few days until a replacement was purchased and installed.

So I got to thinking about lights that need to never go out, and my mind settled on Traffic Control Lights [we usually call them 'stop lights', cause I guess we don't notice them so much when they are 'go lights']. They need to work, and I expect them to work. There is such a light near my home that has been burning -green, yellow, red, green, yellow, red…for years and I have never pulled up to a burned out light. [We have had a power failure or two, but that's a different blog].

Why don’t Traffic Lights burn out? Well, as it turns out there is a clever, and very simple reason why the modern traffic lights in your city don’t burn out. Each “bulb” is really about 60 little l.e.d. bulbs. All closely aligned, but independently powered. That way, when a bulb does go out [and it does happen], it’s just one dot out of 60, and the light still works just fine…think about that…important that it never goes out, closely aligned, yet independently powered…does that remind you of any other lights?

“And seeing the multitudes…He opened His mouth and taught them, saying…You are the light of the world…” -Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount

I believe that is the way God designed his people to bring light into this world. Like the traffic control signal, God’s people, living God’s way, give direction to the world. It is a light we can’t afford to lose. For that reason, we need to be closely aligned, not identical, but all shining the same light. Yet we must be independently powered, because sometimes, one of our lights goes out.

Consider the chaos, tragedy, and darkness our world would be plunged into if we all quit shining each time one of us stopped. When closely aligned and working together, we can bring light, significant, helpful light, into this world. And they will see our light and glorify the Father.

Part of the brilliance [pun intended] of God’s plan is that you don’t depend on anyone else to shine. All you need is your own connection to the power source. Don’t waste your time examining all the others around you for their “candlepower output”. Some will shine brighter than you, and others may quit shining, for a time, or forever. Don’t worry about that. We are each an individual ray of light from the Father of lights. Just maintain your own connection and keep on shining!

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16

Where’s Your Donkey?

Luk 19:29-35

“And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, 30  Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither. 31  And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him. 32  And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them.  33 And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt?  34 And they said, The Lord hath need of him.  35 And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon.”

I have a photograph in my office of Cathy that was taken on our 15th anniversary.  It is my favorite photograph of Cathy.  I keep it at my office so I can see it regularly.  It is not the most technically perfect photo – she is casually dressed, the lighting is poor and there are strangers in the background.  The detail in that photograph that thrills me every time I look at it, is the twinkle in her eyes … that twinkle is worth moving mountains to earn.

There is a detail in this snapshot of Jesus that thrills me but is easily overlooked.  It is the donkey’s owners’ submission to the Lord and Master.  Jesus had a need, and they responded – they obeyed.  It is easy for us to think, “Sure they obeyed. How could they not?”  Yet we do it all the time – fail to obey that is.  All of us have a “donkey”, but the secret to pleasing the Lord is making the donkey available for his purpose.

Some questions for the donkey’s owners’ (and indirectly us):

  •
    • *Did you know it was going to be used for such a noble purpose?  The King of kings and Lord of lords – the One who set the cosmos and created the gnat – riding on your donkey.
    • *Was it easy to give, or did you struggle with the decision?
    • *Was it your last donkey?
    • *Did you get to see Jesus use it?
    • *What didn’t get done while Jesus used it?
    • *Did you humbly witness about how Jesus used your donkey?
    • *Did you have a hint that the Holy Spirit would have all four Gospel writers tell the story of your obedience and two-thousand years later it would still inspire people?

There were other “donkeys” used by the Lord throughout the bible to move His story along:

  •
    • *Rahab’s home – sheltered the spies
    • *A little boy’s sack lunch of two fish and five biscuits – feeds thousands
    • *David’s sling – kills a giant and leads God’s people to victory
    • *Mary’s alabaster box of precious ointment – anointed Jesus for his death
    • *The rich man’s tomb – a three day resting spot for the Lord
    • *On and on  we could go …

So, what is it in this snapshot that thrills me?  It is the fact that God uses the little things that I am able to offer to move Jesus to another place.  I mean, at the end of the day, what really great things can I do?  Can any of us do?  But we all have donkeys.  What is your donkey? And, what are you doing with your donkey?

Can you comfort people and make them feel good by your thoughtfulness or a hug?  Maybe you can sing, preach, visit, hold, pray, program a computer, drive a nail, teach, plant, paint, plumb, account, clean, help, pick up trash, straighten books, or write a check – whatever it is that you do, or have, is your donkey.  And, knowing that whatever it is, if I give it to the Lord, it will be used in some way to move Jesus to another place – in this I am thrilled!
